Academic Program
The academic curriculum at Heights Christian Junior High is based upon the content knowledge and experience of the teachers, biblical truths and principles, and the California State Standards .
HCJH hosted a full accreditation visit in February 2006 and recieved a six-year term of accreditation. A one day mid-term visit took place in the spring of 2009 and a full visit will take place again in the spring of 2012.
All HCJH students participate in the spring administration of the Stanford Achievement Test. In addition, all students participate in standards-based benchmark assessments in all core academic courses. These summative assessments together with quarterly authentic assessments comprise 15% of each student's quarterly grade. Classroom teachers are encouraged to use frequent formative assessments rather than infrequent summative assessments.
The use of technology by students and teachers is a critical commonent of the instructional program at HCJH. Students receive direct instruction in technology and practice their skills in core academic courses. Several technology related electives are also offered.
HCJH provides several tutoring opportunities for all students at no additional expence. Before school "homework help" is available Tuesday through Friday. Math tutoring is available by appointment Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Most teachers are available by appointment each day at lunch.
We believe that homework is an neccessary component of any academic program. Homework at HCJH is an extension of the work done in the classroom. Homework should be independent practice of skills and content introduced during classroom instruction. It is our desire that daily homework in a given subject should not take more than 20 to 30 minutes to complete for the average student. Students should also read a minimum of 30 minutes daily (five days a week) in addition to regular homework. In addition, we discourage regular written homework on Wednesdays, weekends and holidays.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is widely used in schools to promote student reading. Each student's reading ability is one of the primary factors in academic success. We want HCJH to be a school where students read. Students should read a minimum of 30 minutes daily (five days a week) in addition to regular homework.
